New Moon

The Moon is between Earth and the Sun, so the lit side faces away from us and the Moon is difficult to see.

Waxing Crescent

A slim crescent of light appears and grows each night as the Moon moves towards the First Quarter.

First Quarter

Half of the Moon’s visible face is illuminated. The lit portion is increasing towards Full Moon.

Waxing Gibbous

More than half of the visible Moon is lit, and the illuminated area continues to grow.

Full Moon

The Moon’s visible face is fully illuminated, creating the bright, round Moon seen at night.

Waning Gibbous

More than half of the Moon remains lit, but the illuminated area is now beginning to shrink.

Last Quarter

Half of the Moon’s visible face is illuminated again, this time with the lit portion decreasing.

Waning Crescent

Only a slim crescent remains before the cycle returns to the New Moon.
